Skansen Kurpiowski

This open air museum gives an authentic taste of Polish peasant life in an idyllic setting.

Om

On June 19th, 1927, Adam Chętnik opened his open air museum presenting the history, ethnography and nature of Kurpie Green Forest. At first his collection was exhibited in two wooden buildings built according to Kurpie tradition, but during World War II, the museum was completely, with only two beehive tree carvings and entrance gate to the museum surviving. Reconstruction began in the late 1950s, and more recently, 21 historical buildings were relocated to the 4,5 hectare museum, as well as other examples of rural architecture such as chapels and wells. Today the exhibition has a section dedicated to beekeeping, built around the surviving carvings, which have been supplemented with traditional hive logs and beekeeping equipment. The agricultural section contains farms and village industry objects such as windmill, forge, oil mill and water mill, located in lowland part of the museum by the river.
