This exquisite mansion is surrounded by seemingly endless parkland, which is filled with its own monuments.
Though the Stourhead House and Garden date back to the 13th century, the spectacular estate seen today was constructed during the 18th century when Stourhead was purchased by Henry Hoare. Hoare had an elegant Palladian manor erected - one of the first in England - which he and his progeny filled with fine furnishings and a beautiful art collection. The estate’s 2,650 acre grounds were also reworked to include an artificial lake, and plenty of Grecco-Roman follies to compliment the classical Palladian architecture. Today, visitors can step into the Hoare family home to marvel at the exquisite interior, with its countless paintings, decadent ornamentation, and refined library. On a pleasant walk through the landscape park, travellers can discover the Temple of Apollo and Grotto, or soak in views of the park from atop the red brick Tower.
