Strecno Castle

This reconstructed medieval castle on a 103 meter cliff looks like its part of the landscape, and offers unrivalled views of the Upper Vah region.

Om

First mentioned in the year 1316, Strečno Castle has had a dramatic past. The castle’s strategic position and well-designed fortifications ultimately led to its demise, when emperor Leopold I ordered its destruction in 1698 after a drawn-out struggle to reconquer it castle from the armies of Imre Thököly. After being left in ruins for more than 350 years, the castle has since been partially reconstructed and now offers visitors a taste of its original splendour. Visitors can still visit the 15th-century chapel, the 14th-century main tower, and the remains of the north palace. While English tours are only offered at limited times, information sheets in a variety of languages (including English) can be obtained during your visit. The castle is closed from December through March, and visitors with mobility issues should take note that access to the site requires a moderately steep walk up a cobbled road.
