Beautiful surroundings, an incomparable Baroque church, and the world’s oldest monastic brewery make for a memorable day out.
Founded around 620 by Irish missionaries, Weltenburg Abbey is the oldest monastery in Bavaria. The abbey was a modest establishment up until the early 18th century when Abbot Maurus Bächl rebuilt most of the complex in the Baroque style. The abbey church in particular is considered a pinnacle of the European Baroque. Every inch of the interior is opulently ornamented, from gilded stucco to colorful frescoes, with an abundance of angels visible from every angle. After enjoying the architecture, you can sit down to enjoy the monastery’s famous beer and some traditional Bavarian fare. Not only is it considered the oldest brewery in the world, but the dark beer has been recognized as the best beer in the world on several occasions.
