The ZSL Whipsnade Zoo opened in 1931 after Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell visited the Bronx Zoological Park, making it the first easily accessible open zoo in Europe. From its humble beginnings with two Lady Amherst's pheasants, a golden pheasant, and five red junglefowl, the zoo has grown to house nearly 4000 animals from nearly 200 different species in a 600 acre park. Visitors can see lions, tigers, elephants, and giraffes in huge outdoor enclosures, and even hop aboard a safari bus. Dedicated to conservation and education, the zoo hosts keeper talks and animal displays so visitors can learn how the playful Red Panda adapted to life in the Himalayas, or how hippos evolved in Africa.
