Terezin (Theresienstadt) was established as a garrison town in the late 18th century but became infamous during WWII when the Nazis converted it into a ghetto and concentration camp. It served as both a transit camp for Jews being sent to extermination camps and as a "show camp" to deceive the Red Cross about the treatment of prisoners.
Terezín is located approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Prague. The drive typically takes about 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, making it an easily accessible day trip from the Czech capital.
Visitors can tour the Small Fortress (used as a Gestapo prison), the Ghetto Museum (housed in a former school), the Magdeburg Barracks with recreated living quarters, the crematorium, morgue, cemetery, and various exhibitions displaying artwork, poems, and personal artifacts created by prisoners during their internment.
The Terezin Memorial presents difficult historical realities that may be disturbing for young children. For older children and teenagers (generally 12+), the site can be educational when properly contextualized. Parents should use discretion and prepare children in advance for what they will see and learn.
