Conca dei Marini

About

The ancient village of Conca dei Marini could date from as far back as the 8th century BC. For the next 2000 years, it would serve as a port and trading base, finally transitioning into a fishing village and holiday destination. Less-known than many other towns on the Amalfi Coast, Conca dei Marini has maintained its laid-back character and sleepy atmosphere. Stretched out along a small bay, the village is all white houses and villas and terraced gardens tumbling down the cliff to the sea. There’s still some bastions of history as well, like the 16th century defensive tower and 14th century Convent of St Rosa (the birthplace of sfogliatella). Just outside of town is the town’s most famous attraction: the Grotta dello Smeraldo. This partially submerged karst cave boasts some beautiful formations and water in a magical emerald green (and an underwater nativity scene!).
