Ludendorff Bridge

Despite German demolition attempts, the Ludendorff Bridge stood long enough to alter the course of the European campaign.

Über

The Ludendorff Bridge, an engineering marvel of nearly 4,800 tons of steel spanning 325 meters across the Rhine, unexpectedly shaped the final phase of World War II. This railway bridge opened in August 1918 and was originally constructed during WWI to facilitate German military transport to the western front. It featured elaborate stone towers on both riverbanks and was connected to a 382-meter tunnel beneath the Erpel mountain. Its capture by the U.S in 1945 marked a crucial strategic victory, as it was the first Allied foothold on the Rhine's eastern bank. Though the damaged structure eventually collapsed on March 17, claiming 30 American lives, its legacy endures through Remagen's Peace Museum, established in 1980. The bridge has permeated popular culture, featuring in films like The Bridge at Remagen (1969) and multiple video games, including the Call of Duty series.
