This early Huesteca ceremonial center offers a glimpse into the major Mesoamerican culture backed by the beautiful Sierra Gorda mountains.
Tancama was occupied between 200BC and 900 AD, likely serving as both an agricultural and ceremonial center for the Huasteca people. Despite having been abandoned for centuries, the site is surprisingly well-preserved, with 42 buildings ranging from ball courts to ceremonial structures to residential areas exhibiting robust Mesoamerican architecture with the signature uneven blocks and circular floor plans characteristic of the Huasteca style. The best part is the site is completely free to visit, and informative bilingual signs shed light on the individual buildings and Huesteca culture. During the winter equinox, the the sun perfectly aligns with the peak of the Cerro Grande mountain, creating a beautiful spectacle that gave the site its name: "the hill of fire".
