Things to do when you get to Naples
As the third-largest city in Italy, there’s no shortage of things to do when you get to Naples, but when creating your itinerary, don’t forget the 3 P’s: the port, palaces, and pizza.
Palace hop around Piazza del Plebiscito
You can easily spend a day at the Piazza del Plebiscito, Naples’ main square. Surrounding this huge space are multiple palaces, including the Royal Palace, Palazzo Salerno, and Prefecture Palace, and the Basilica Royal.
Take in the views from Castel Nuovo
The castle you can see from the Piazza del Plebiscito, is the iconic Castel Nuovo. Built in the 13th century, it’s been modified, updated, and remodeled over the years, and now has a Baroque triumphal arch as its entrance. It’s well worth taking a tour to see the interiors, and the view of the port from the ramparts is the best in the city.
Explore Santa Lucia
Head southwest from the Piazza del Plebiscito and you’ll enter the district of Santa Lucia. This warren of narrow cobbled alleys is the perfect place to lose yourself in Neopolitan living. Originally a fishing settlement, it’s a great place to stop for some authentic seafood dishes.
Patrol the port
Keep heading downhill in Santa Lucia, and you’ll finally reach Naples harbor. The basis of Naple’s economy, the harbor is split into a number of different ports, and is abuzz at all hours. During the day though, you’ll want to pay a visit to the Castel dell'Ovo. The oldest fortification still standing in Naples, there’s been some defensive structure here since the 6th century BC.
Find the best pizza in Naples
Sample as much pizza as possible during your Naples explorations. Restaurants in the city battle for the title of “Best Pizza in Naples”. L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele is always popular, especially after Julia Roberts ate here in Eat, Pray, Love. But you also don’t want to miss a distinctly Neopolitan experience; keep your eyes peeled for street pizza carts, which fry their pies rather than bake them.

“We used this service from Naples to Positano and again when returning . The service was easily booked online. We went with the base fare , 130 euros each way and it was great. Both drivers we safe and very friendly . I highly recommend this company .”
“We had the best experience with our driver, Guido, with Daytrips. He was punctual, pleasant and provided an excellent history during the drive from Naples train terminal to Positano. We stopped in Pompeii to visit the ruins as well. The Mercedes was clean and comfortable.”
“Alfonso took me from my hotel In Positano to my hotel in Naples stopping at Mt Vesuvius on the way. We pre arranged this excursion and it was so much fun and worth every minute. Alfonso gave me a great deal of tourist information so that I could make informed choices. I really enjoyed my morning!.”
“We used Daytrip for our ride from Naples to Positano and it went seamlessly. Mario picked us up at our expected time. He pointed out landmarks as we drove by them and was friendly the entire way. I would suggest Daytrip and hopefully you're lucky enough to have Mario driving.”
“I messed up on booking my train from Naples to Lucca. We used Day Trip to book a transfer from Positano, Italy to Naples to catch our train. The driver was on time and drove at a perfect speed for my car sick kids not enjoying the twists and turns. The driver got us to the train station on time. Day Trip was quick to respond to questions.”
“We used Daytrip to go from Naples to Positano with a stop in Pompeii. Our driver, Alfonso, was an absolute perfect tour guide. He arrived on time, in a new looking van that was clean and in great condition. Alfonso spoke English very well, was friendly and shared his knowledge about the area. Alfonso came prepared for rain so we didn’t get soaked during our tour of Pompeii. He also suggested a lovely winery for lunch where we had a perfect day trying local cuisine and tasty wine by a local family run farm. We were able to purchase olive oil, vinegar and wine and have it shipped back home in time for Christmas gifts. Positano was great but we were there during a thunderstorm. We were planning to stay as long as possible and wander the streets until 8 pm, but due to the storm, things were closed and the weather made it miserable, so Alfonso was able to arrange picking us up early and taking us out of the storm and into Sorrento to another family run restaurant where we were given a fantastic meal at a very affordable price. We had such a wonderful experience in Naples, Pompeii, Positano and Sorrento because we had an amazing driver who really took care of us! Thank you Alfonso Sorrentino!”
“We had a private transfer from Naples to Positano and also from Positano to Naples on our trip to Italy. Both of our drivers, Francesco and Alfonzo, were absolutely incredible. However I do have to call our Alfonzo for being over the top accommodating. Our original driver was not able to make it to pick us up in Positano in time for our flight due to a horrible car crash that occurred on the coastal road, blocking traffic for hours. Our original driver worked with Alfonzo who happened to be in the area picking up another couple. He went out of his way to pick us up and a solution was in place before we even knew there was a problem! Alfonzo was the best tour guide through the whole trip and was very knowledgeable and proud of his country which is why we loved him. But his and Daytrips quick thinking and accommodation saved us from a cancelled flight! Thanks so much Alfonzo and team!”
“Daytrip was a fantastic experience that my wife and I enjoyed and I was originally referred to by a friend. The communication with the company was fantastic as they sent me emails for driver change updates, car and license plate info along with a phone number. They email you directions and a picture of the meeting pickup spot at the Napoli Centrale station. We had Mirko the first time and he was very nice and friendly. We had Alfonso the second time and he was phenomenal!! He sang an Italian song in the car, answered our questions on pasta making process (machine vs bronze dies) and why Italians eat their pasta al dente/harder than we do in the US, and other questions too. He was proud of being from Naples area and said they have the best tomatoes in the world because of the fertile soil from the Mount Vesuvius volcano. The trip was a joy full of laughs and information. He also dropped us off at a better, safer pizzeria option in Naples than the one I originally had researched. A great value and takes the stress out of travel. Grazie Mille, Daytrip!”
“Incredibly convenient! We first thought to take a train between cities (Positano to Naples) but when thinking of the taxis, train, etc., a couple recommended to us to use this service to have a driver and it was the BEST decision. The driver was the nicest guy, and the car very comfortable. Highly recommend!!!!!”
“Pascale O was our driver. He’s a Pompeii local and was full of knowledge and advice. He turned up on time and had a comfortable vehicle. We paid 190 euro for 5 people which was reasonable compared to other companies in the area. He picked us up at 9am and we arrived in Naples around 12.30pm after a stop in Pompeii.”
