Fogo Beach, also known as Praia do Fogo, is named “beach of fire” after the nearby Fogo volcano, which is one of the most active volcanoes in the Azores. The hot springs located just a short distance from the beach keeps the seawater tepid, with hydrothermal vents underwater making for a pleasing swimming experience. The bay is filled with soft sand to lay back and enjoy a spot of tanning under the parasols. Surrounding the beach are tall tree-ringed mountains, creating a stunning effect of luscious green meeting emerald blue waters. You can enjoy a hike through the surrounding areas before cooling off in the water, or head to one of the several small restaurants and cafes located near the beach to enjoy local cuisine and fresh seafood. The famous Cozido das Furnas is a local dish, consisting of a stew cooked underground using volcanic heat.
