Lascaux

In order to preserve the ancient cave paintings of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors now experience the cave art in a cutting-edge museum.

About

Some 20,000 years ago, prehistoric man adorned the walls of Lascaux with hundreds of colorful paintings. A testament to the talents of our ancient ancestors, after his visit to the cave Picasso allegedly said ‘we have invented nothing’. Shortly after being opened to the public, it became apparent that the very presence of people was severely damaging the paintings, so it was closed to visitors. Today, there are two museums where visitors experience the beauty and history of the caves. The original, known as Lascaux II is the original reproduction, filled with identical copies of the horses, buffalo, and other animals depicted in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lascaux IV, a cutting-edge museum opened in 2016, houses not only a replica of the Lascaux cave, but also interactive workshops and immersive technology which put the cave into the context of human history.
