Bulgaria
Known for its springtime blooms, the quiet old town and unusual covered bridge make Lovech a popular getaway for Bulgarians.
Founded by the Thracians in the 4th century BC, archaeological evidence found in caves around the town show the area’s been settled since prehistory. For much of the town’s history, it was an important trade center and was fortified accordingly - the remains of its medieval fortress still stand above the town. In the historic town center, visitors can enjoy quiet cobbled streets lined with colorful buildings before heading to Lovech’s most recognizable building: the covered bridge. Built between 1872 and 1874, the bridge is the only one of its kind in the Balkans - not just used to cross the river, its interior is lined with shops and cafes.
