Réunion

Trou de Fer

Travelers can hike through the surrounding mountains and tropical forests to witness the stark, rugged beauty of the Iron Hole

About

At the very core of Réunion Island lies a mystical geological feature sometimes called the “Iron Hole,” a collapsed volcanic crater ringed by staggering waterfalls. The crater plummets to a depth of over a quarter mile (300 meters) and is fed by nearby rivers. This mysterious gorge was not explored until the late 1980s after earlier attempts proved fatal. While descending to the crater’s depth is not possible for visitors, anyone can hike to the surrounding viewpoints at the top of the crater and witness this fascinating natural quirk from a higher vantage point. The lush surrounding forests and rushing waterfalls lend the area a unique mystic quality that makes it an unforgettable destination. The hike is fairly easy and involves a 2-mile (3.2 km) trek along well-maintained paths to a viewing platform safely away from the thundering falls.
