First mentioned in the 13th century, the establishment of Eberhard Karls University by Duke Eberhard im Bart of Württemberg in 1477 made Tübingen one of the most influential places of learning in the Holy Roman Empire. One of the oldest universities in Central Europe, the University is an integral part of the city’s identity - the 12th century castle that birthed the town is now a part of the college campus. After admiring the historic architecture, visitors can head into the museum to learn more about its history. Visitors can also head to the Market Square to to enjoy a cup of coffee and admire the distinctive architecture of the City Hall and the surrounding buildings. The Collegiate Church, built towards the end of the 15th century was one of the first to convert to to Martin Luther's protestant church, and houses some exceptional sculptures.
