Ansbach

About

Founded by a group of peasant families in the 7th century, in the 14th century, Ansbach became the seat of the Hohenzollern Dynasty, and would continue to receive noble attention for the next 500 years. While this spurred the construction of some beautiful historic buildings such as the St. Johannis Church, the Residenz Palace is the pinnacle of Ansbach’s noble splendor. Inside, visitors can marvel at its richly furnished rooms, such as the cavernous banquet hall, or the ‘Tiled Hall’, fitted with around 2,800 tiles from the local manufactory. The town also has a dark side - such as the werewolf that killed many of the town’s children in the 17th century, and the enigmatic Kaspar Hauser, who claimed to have been raised in a dark cell before moving to Ansbach, where he was fatally stabbed in the palace’s manicured gardens.
