Arenal Volcano National Park

Famous for its perfect cone shape, Arenal is Costa Rica’s most active volcano. Its lava has been flowing consistently since its last eruption in 1968. While the eruption was a tragedy, it also transformed the region into one of the most unique in the country. Surrounding the volcano is a vast rainforest that's especially popular with birders - nearly all of Costa Rica's 850 identified bird species can be found here. Within the park you can hike to see the moonscape of the still-smoking caldera, walk over hanging bridges in the rainforest, relax in naturally-heated hot springs or take to the water in a raft, boat or canoe.
