Bad Reichenhall

Before becoming a royal spa town, this alpine escape was known for its salt production for thousands of years.

About

While the Romans were the first to establish a permanent settlement at Bad Reichenhall, the brine pools here had been exploited for their salt since around 2000 BC. In the 19th century, much of the town burned down, but it reemerged as a tourist attraction. Visitors can admire the traditional Bavarian charms of the town center, such as the colorfully painted town hall, or the regal Royal Spa House, while snacking one a strudel. At the Old Salt Works, considered one of the most beautiful buildings of its kind, a guided tour brings visitors through the mine’s system of tunnels, where visitors can learn first-hand about the history of salt extraction of salt.
