Germany

Besucherbergwerk F60

It might look like the Eiffel Tower’s fallen over, but this feat of engineering is one of the largest mobile machines in the world.

About

Half a kilometer long and weighing 13,500 tons, this giant conveyor belt is a feat of engineering that had a simple purpose: moving soil away from a mining site. In 1991, following the reunification of Germany, the the conveyor was decommissioned after only a year of use - but not before it had created new valley in the landscape. Since 1998, the site has been open to visitors, who can join a guided tour up into the bowels of the beast to learn about the machine’s construction, function, and to gaze out over the landscape it created. After dark, the almost alien-looking structure is brought to life by a light-and-sound show.
