Desierto de los Leones

Mexico’s first national park is haunted by the abandoned Desierto de los Leones convent, the ruins of which add a historic air to the stunning natural surroundings. While Desierto de los Leones is neither a desert, nor filled with lions, the stunningly overgrown plants, flowers, and shrubs add an element of whimsy and are reminiscent of a mythical past. Ideal for a moment of reflective mediation, the peaceful surroundings are what attracted this area to the Spanish monks. Eventually being abandoned in 1810, this convent and the areas surrounding it, are filled with all kinds of wildlife and even legends about the supernatural. Make sure to bring a jacket, as the cool misty environment only adds to the calming atmosphere of the convent. And, beware of rattlesnakes!
