Knole manor as it stands today was constructed in the 15th century as an archbishop's residence, with additions made in the 16th, and 17th centuries when it became the property of the Lord High Treasurer Thomas Sackville. It’s Sackville’s renovations that the estate is known for today, for it has remained essentially unchanged, and still stands as a ‘monument to private greed.’ While the 7th Baron Sackville and his family still live in Knole’s private apartments, the manor’s formal spaces belong to the National Trust, meaning visitors can experience its historic grandeur. In the rich showrooms, visitors will find lavish furnishings and rich artwork from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries that have been carefully conserved in their original states. Once home to Vita Sackville-West, author and former lover to Virginia Woolf, a unique audioguided tour reveals the lives of Knole’s women.
