Lienz
The Lienz area has been settled since the Bronze Age, and history's tides have left rich markings in this Alpine town sited at the confluence of three rivers.
About
The Roman city and open-air museum of Aguntum is located just outside the town and offers fascinating insights into town life in the first and second centuries. In Lienz itself the town's main square, the Hauptplatz is full of charm, with its palm trees and cafe terraces. The Town Hall is located in the Lieburg, a twin onion-domed pocket-sized castle built in the early 17th century. For the bigger variety visit Lienz's landmark Bruck Castle, dating from the 13th century, set on a mixed-forest hill overlooking the town. Apart from fabulous views the castle ā named after the bridge at its foot - is a beautifully preserved building dedicated to the region's rich artistic and cultural heritage. Its art collection covers half a millenium of paintings and sculpture, including the biggest public collection of East Tyrolean Expressionist painter Albin Egger-Lienz, born near the town of his hyphenated name.
