Linderhof Palace

The name of King Ludwig II of Germany is synonymous with extravagant Versailles-inspired palaces and decadence, and Linderhof Palace is no exception.

About

The palace and the surrounding park form one of the most artistic and stylistically nineteenth-century structures that can be viewed today. This royal residence is the only palace that the “Mad King” lived to see completed and the one he spent the most time residing in. Decorated in the Rococo style, gilding, tapestries and ornate embellishments can be found everywhere. The sound of visitors’ jaws dropping are often heard when discovering that this world of fantasy and flamboyance includes an illuminated artificial grotto surrounding a small lake, on which floats a shell-shaped boat surrounded by garlands of flowers. In addition to the palace, there are beautiful formal gardens with a fountain in the center fed by a made-made waterfall which cascades down the mountainside. Although just as decadent, Linderhof is the smallest of Ludwig’s creations and tours take just thirty minutes, making it the ideal stop-off on any journey.
