About
But this quiet spot is in the Guinness Book of Records for hosting what is the longest pedestrian ‘Tibet-style’ suspension bridge in the world. Called, somewhat unromantically Highline 179, after Highway 179 above which it passes, it’s 406 metres long and connects the ruins of Ehrenburg Castle and the ruins of Fort Claudia either side of a steep-sided valley. The 1.2 metre-wide walkway is made of steel-grating which allows you to see the wooded slopes of the valley below, the valley floor and the highway. With no safety concerns – the bridge is built to hold 500 people at a time – you can go at your own speed and enjoy thrilling views. The two castles are appealing enough in themselves. Fort Claudia, built by the Tyrolean Archduchess Claudia in the mid-1600s played a major role in recapturing Ehrenburg Castle from the invading Swedes. While Ehrenburg’s museum offers fascinating insights into the area’s history.
