Santa Severa Castle

This scenic beach-front locale has been a desirable location since pre-Roman times, and the medieval castle now offers up some culture by the seaside.

About

(Closed on Mondays!) Built on the foundations of an ancient Roman fort, which itself was built on the site of an even older Etruscan port, this medieval castle offers visitors a bit of history with their beach. The structure seen today dates back to the fourteenth century, but a discerning eye will notice the massive cyclopean masonry at the base of the castle - this is the foundation from the Roman structure. In 1482, ownership was transferred to the Order of the Holy Spirit, and it remained theirs until 1980. Today, the ownership of the monumental complex belongs to the Lazio Region, which has entrusted the Santa Marinella Town Council to manage it. Rather than offering the traditional castle experience, visitors instead have access to the National Museum Antiquarium of Pyrgi, the Maritime and Ancient Navigation Museum, and the Museum of the Rock. Please check the opening hours ahead of your visit, as the hours are seasonal.
