Know more about your day trip

The Necropolis is largely smoothly paved and manageable for most visitors. However, some tombs are only accessible via steep staircases. Visitors with mobility limitations should check in advance which tombs can be viewed comfortably, as not all areas are equally accessible.
Tarquinia is about 13 miles (21 km) from Civitavecchia, making it one of the closest day trip destinations available from the port. The drive takes roughly 25 to 30 minutes, leaving you more time to explore once you arrive.
It is one of the best. Few places in Italy offer such direct and well-preserved contact with the Etruscan civilization that preceded Rome. Between the painted tombs, the National Museum, and the medieval town, Tarquinia rewards visitors with a deep and layered historical experience that feels genuinely off the beaten path.
Absolutely. The medieval old town of Tarquinia is well worth exploring, with winding cobblestone streets, Romanesque churches, and the National Museum of Tarquinia, which houses a superb collection of Etruscan artifacts including the famous winged horses terracotta relief. The town also has a lovely hilltop setting with views over the surrounding countryside.
The Necropolis is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00. It is closed on Mondays. Hours may vary during public holidays, so checking ahead of your visit is always a good idea to avoid disappointment.
The Necropolis contains dozens of decorated underground burial chambers adorned with vibrant frescoes depicting scenes of banquets, athletics, hunting, and daily Etruscan life. Only a selection of tombs is open at any one time to preserve the paintings, but what is visible is genuinely extraordinary and unique in the world.
Tarquinia is one of Italy's most important Etruscan cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for its remarkable Necropolis, which contains underground painted tombs dating back thousands of years, making it one of the finest examples of Etruscan art and funerary culture anywhere in the world.
Tarquinia's cuisine is rooted in the flavors of northern Lazio. Look for lombrichelli, a thick hand-rolled pasta similar to pici, typically served with mushroom or lamb ragu. Local wines from the nearby Etruscan Coast area also pair well with the hearty regional cooking.
