The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1986 as the worldтАЩs first jaguar sanctuary, and today, an estimated 40 to 50 of the big cats live within the parkтАЩs 400 square kilometers. Along with jaguars, the countryтАЩs four other wild cats - the puma, ocelot, margay, and jaguarundi - also prowl the park, along with tapirs, anteaters, armadillos, brocket deer, coatimundis, kinkajous, otters, peccaries, tayras iguanas, rodents, and countless other native animals. Bird-watchers will delight in trying to spot some of the nearly 300 bird species that live in the trees, from tiny hummingbirds to the king vulture. During your hike, youтАЩll likely be serenaded by the cacophonous howling of the parkтАЩs community of black howler monkeys.
