Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
Belizeâs most famous park is buzzing with life, from rowdy howler monkeys to stealthy jaguars.
Om
The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1986 as the worldâs first jaguar sanctuary, and today, an estimated 40 to 50 of the big cats live within the parkâs 400 square kilometers. Along with jaguars, the countryâs four other wild cats - the puma, ocelot, margay, and jaguarundi - also prowl the park, along with tapirs, anteaters, armadillos, brocket deer, coatimundis, kinkajous, otters, peccaries, tayras iguanas, rodents, and countless other native animals. Bird-watchers will delight in trying to spot some of the nearly 300 bird species that live in the trees, from tiny hummingbirds to the king vulture. During your hike, youâll likely be serenaded by the cacophonous howling of the parkâs community of black howler monkeys.
