Janie Seddon Shipwreck

With the spectacular Tasman Bay as the backdrop this steel skeleton is well worth the detour

Only two minutes from Highway 60 is the fascinating Janie Seddon Shipwreck. This rusting beauty had a proud pre-war history. Built in Scotland in 1901 she spent most of her life in Wellington Harbour before being drafted into the New Zealand Navy for the war effort in 1939, allegedly firing the first shot on behalf of British and Commonwealth forces, a warning shot across the bow of a potential enemy vessel. After a largely unsuccessful conversion to a fishing boat post-war, she proved too expensive to scrap for steel so she has lain in situ here ever since. The seagulls love it! And so too should you - take a picnic or your takeaway fish тАШnтАЩ chips to one of the benches, or at low tide you can wade through the sticky mud right up to the amber hulk (but please donтАЩt go inside!). Best enjoyed at sunset.
