The Torrechiara Castle is a notable example of 15th century Italian castles. It was built between 1448 and 1460 by Pier Maria Rossi. While built originally as a military structure, it was also intended as a home for Pier Maria and his lover. Its original structure has remained intact throughout history. The fortress is protected by three rings of walls, with the inner castle made up of four corner towers, all connected by rooms of beautiful decorations. Perhaps the most impressive among the decorated rooms is the Camera d’oro (Golden Room), named after the pure gold that once set in the walls. The frescoes date back to 1452 and are a remarkable display of secular Italian art. Torrechiara Castle was purchased by the state in 1912 and is now a national monument open to the public.
