According to legend, in 1738, tears were seen on the statue of the Scourged Saviour. To accommodate the masses of pilgrims flocking to see the miraculous figure, the Wieskirche was erected. Today, the interior is considered one of the finest executions of the Rococo style in the world. The huge, vibrant altarpiece was made by the Munich court painter Balthasar August Albrecht, which the statues of the four patrons of the western church тАУ Jerome, Ambrose, Augustine and Gregory the Great тАУ were crafted Tyrolean sculptor Anton Sturm. From the rich frescoes, to ornate stucco, glittering gilding, and expert trompe-lтАЩoeil ceiling, the entire interior of the church is masterful expression of artistic ingenuity executed in the richest of styles.
