Main attractions

• The Nieuwe Kerk on the Markt holds the mausoleum of William of Orange and the crypt of the Dutch royal house — over 50 members of the House of Orange-Nassau are interred here • Royal Delft (Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, est. 1653) — the only remaining original Delftware factory, with a museum, working demonstration studios and the complete history of the blue-and-white tradition • The Vermeer Centre (Vermeer Centrum Delft) traces the life and technique of Delft's most celebrated painter — none of his original works hang here, but the centre is the best introduction to his world and method • The canal network around Oude Delft and Voldersgracht offers some of the most painterly urban scenery in the Netherlands

What to eat

• Stroopwafels fresh from a market stall with coffee; lunch at a canal-side eetcafé — the Markt and surrounding streets have good options for Dutch dagschotel (dish of the day)

• The Nieuwe Kerk tower climb gives the best view over Delft's rooftops and canal grid — a separate ticket is required and it involves a steep spiral staircase; worth it on a clear day
