Cusco to Maras and Moray: Private day trip

The Maras Salt Mines haven't changed much since the Incas created them over 1,000 years ago. The 3,000 pools built into the hillside produce pink salt, bath salt, and flavored salt, and yields around 150 kilograms per month. Through the simple process of evaporation and other primitive harvesting techniques, the farmers bag the salt and sell it in local markets. Due to the cost of shipping the heavy salt in such a remote area, you won't be able to purchase it anywhere else. The thousands of pools provide a stunning geometric landscape along the mountain side, which will be a for sure unforgettable view.

Situated on a plateau 3500 metres above sea level, Moray is a prime example of Incan ingenuity. Not only are the stepped, concentric circle structures a marvel of engineering, these grassy terraces also form the basis of a massive agricultural experiment. The depth and orientation of these terraces contribute to temperature differences of up to 15 degrees celsius, meaning different crops could be planted at different heights and positions. Soil sample prove that earth and seeds were transposed from all over Peru for this large biological science experiment. According to studies more than 250 types of vegetables were cultivated here, aided by a typical Incan irrigation system.
