Montpellier to Sete and Beziers: Private day trip

Occupied since Neolithic times, and officially settled in 575 BC, Béziers is one of the oldest cities in France. Positioned on an important trade-route, it’s long been known for its wine, with the city’s winegrowers even inventing a container for carrying wine in a ship’s hold. In 1209 crusaders massacred nearly the entire city, including the Catholic population, and then burned it down, in the Church’s crusade against the Cathar sect. While the original Cathedral was destroyed in the massacre, its 13th century replacement still dominates the town today. From it’s hilltop position, it offers stupendous views of the city and the surrounding vineyards. If you wear appropriate clothing, you can also explore the interior, with its rich ornamentation and medieval artwork, as well as the peaceful cloisters. Below the cathedral, the Musée des Beaux Arts exhibits works by Rubens, Delacroix, and several local artists.
