Sofia to Prohodna Cave and Devetashka Cave: Private day trip

Prohodna Cave is one of the most well-known attractions in the Karlukovo Gorge, one of the largest karst regions in Bulgaria, and features two entrances which lie opposite one another. The larger of the two entrances reaches an impressive 45 metres in height and is a popular location for bungee jumping. There is evidence indicating that humans lived in the cave during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. The middle chamber’s “Eyes of God” are the most well-known feature of the cave, which let light into the cave and provide a unique view of the skies above. The cave is considered one of the most easily accessible caves in Bulgaria, but appropriate footwear is recommended.

Stretching for 2 kilometers, and reaching a height of 100 meters in some areas, this cave is a massive natural marvel. Seven large ‘eyes’ let in light and water, supporting a surprisingly lush ecosystem. About 200 meters from the entrance, the cave splits. To the left, a small river forms little lakes and waterfalls, while on the right, several chambers culminate with a round hall, known as the Altar. As impressive as the cave’s proportions is its history: archaeological excavations carried out after the cave was ‘rediscovered’ found it was inhabited from around 70,000 BC through 4,000 BC.
