Know more about your day trip

Restaurants are limited near both caves, so plan accordingly. The villages of Karlukovo (near Prohodna) and Letnitsa (near Devetashka) have small, family-run mehana taverns serving traditional Bulgarian dishes like banitsa, shopska salad, and grilled meats. Packing snacks, sandwiches, and plenty of water is a good idea, especially if you're traveling with kids.
Neither cave requires a guide for general exploration, since both have well-marked walking trails through their main chambers. However, adventure activities at Prohodna such as bungee jumping, rappelling, or sport climbing must be arranged with licensed local operators in advance.
Prohodna Cave is about 75 miles (121 km) northeast of Sofia, with a driving time of around 1 hour and 45 minutes. Devetashka Cave sits roughly an hour beyond Prohodna, near the town of Letnitsa. The total round trip including stops at both caves takes about 10 hours and 15 minutes, making it a full but rewarding day out.
Devetashka Cave is open to visitors most of the year, but access is restricted from June 1 to July 31 to protect breeding bats and migratory birds. The remaining months offer full access to the main chamber, river, and walking trails. Always check the official park website before your visit to confirm current access conditions.
Spring (May) and early autumn (September to October) offer the best conditions for visiting both Prohodna and Devetashka caves, with mild weather, lush surroundings, and dramatic sunlight effects through the cave openings. Summer can be hot outside the caves, while winter brings ice formations but slippery paths. Avoid Devetashka during the June-July bat protection closure.
Devetashka Cave gained international fame as a filming location for The Expendables 2, where its enormous chamber and ceiling openings created a striking backdrop. The cave's scale and natural lighting have also drawn documentary crews and photographers from around the world. Visitors can recognize spots featured on screen during their walk through the main hall.
Wear sturdy waterproof walking shoes with good grip, since cave floors can be wet, muddy, or uneven. Bring a light jacket or sweater since cave interiors stay cool year-round, even when the weather outside is warm. A flashlight or headlamp is helpful for darker corners, and don't forget your camera for the iconic skylight shots.
Prohodna Cave earned the nickname Eyes of God because of two large, almond-shaped openings in its ceiling that resemble human eyes when viewed from below. On rainy days, water dripping through them creates the impression of tears. The natural rock arch shape is one of the most photographed geological features in Bulgaria.
