Winchester was England’s capital before London. It’s got royal history, old legends, and some seriously good architecture.
Start at Winchester Cathedral. It’s long, quiet, and full of history. You’ll see Jane Austen’s grave, some incredible medieval stonework, and stained glass that somehow made it through World War II. Then walk over to the Great Hall, it’s the only part of Winchester Castle still standing. Inside, there’s the Round Table sitting big, bold, and painted with the names of King Arthur’s knights. Believe the legend or don’t, it’s still a striking thing to see. Take your time getting there. The streets in between are full of character. Old pubs, crooked timber buildings, and a mix of past centuries all in one place.
