Named after a national Uruguayan hero of independence, Jose Gervasio Artigas, the city of Artigas has a lot to live up to. Luckily, this charming border town has much to offer travelers passing through. More outdoorsy folk can visit Piedra Pintada, an impressive sandstone boulder 19 meters high with surrounding camping and swimming facilities. Similar is the park Paseo 7 De Septiembre, just on the border with Brazil and a picturesque locale for those who want a calming walk in a green space. Otherwise, it’s good to note that Artigas is renowned for its production of agate and amethyst stones - visitors will have their choice in a plethora of locally crafted jewelry, or can take a tour of a local mine and production facility.
