Founded in the 13th century by King Ottokar II of Bohemia, as a way to increase the royal presence in the homeland of the influential House of Rosenberg, České Budějovice is best known for its beer. Once the imperial brewery for the Holy Roman Emperor himself, its Svitavy brewery operating from 1256 to 2002. For those looking to get a taste of this tradition, it's possible to tour the Budweiser Budvar Brewery, more commonly known as 'Czech Budweiser', though reservations are required at least 2 days in advance. The Old Town is home to one of the largest squares in Europe, measuring a full hectare. For the best view, climb the the 16th century Black Tower for sweeping views across the square. The charming Town Hall, decorated with murals and bronze gargoyles, marks the hour with a tune from it’s glockenspiel-like bells, making it a great place to relax with a lager.
