France
With its UNESCO-listed bridge, charming stone houses, and a gorgeous chateau, it’s easy to see why Estaing is one of France’s most beautiful villages.
Nestled on the banks of the Lot river, the town of Estaing grew around its medieval chateau. The chateau’s owners, the powerful Rouergue family, featured prominently in the past 1000 years of local history. Visitors can even take a self-guided tour of the 15th century chateau to admire its wide range of architectural and design elements. Opposite the chateau is Estaing’s beautiful 15th century church, which houses the relics of Saint Fleuret, the bishop of Auvergne who died in Estaing in 621 on his way back from Rome. The 16th century Gothic bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Santiago de Compostela. Keep an eye out for the statue of the prelate and intricate, 1.5 meter wrought iron cross.
