Grudziadz

This riverside city’s famous fortified granaries are as impressive as any medieval castle.

About

Founded by Bolesław I the Brave as a humble wooden fort, the Teutonic Order began reconstructing the fortifications with stone in 1234. With better protection, the site eventually grew into a town. Under Teutonic supervision, the town flourished a trade centre, rivaling western cities such as Gdansk. Today, the river is still lined with the red-brick granaries the Teutonic Order helped build, some of which are still used for storage. For those looking to step inside these unique structures, the town museum displays the regional history back to the Stone Age. Many of the city’s other historic buildings have seen similar treatment, with the former Benedictine convent now housing the regional museum of contemporary art, and the Jesuit college now serving as the town hall.
