Grutas de Bustamante

This massive cave system located in Nuevo León is known for its impressive limestone formations and stunning underground river.

About

Uncover the fascinating Grutas de Bustamante, also known as “Gruta del Palmito”, packed with gorgeous geological formations in northern Mexico. On the drive there, take in the natural spectacle of mountainsides and dwarf fan palms that line the cave system. It was in this landscape that a local peasant in 1906, looking for palmito plants, discovered a small hole in the top of the mountain and was met with dazzling stalactites and stalagmites inside. Take a guided tour through the underground passages, thought to have formed between 50 and 60 million years ago when the caves were submerged in sea water. Spot marine fossils on the cave walls and walk through the Salon de Gigantes or “Hall of the Giants”, a 600 meter long chamber. An underground river flowers through the caves, carving out intricate channels and pools in the limestone over thousands of years, making for a truly unique and otherworldly environment.
