United Kingdom
Consistently voted the happiest place to live in Britain, this historic town offers everything from Turkish Baths to UNESCO-listed ruins.
Harrogate was first mentioned in the 1330s though the town of today didn’t begin to develop until the 16th century when mineral springs were discovered. High and Low Harrogate attracted wealthy visitors from around England and Continental Europe through World War I, merging into a single town in the process. Today, the heart of the town is still the mineral baths. The Turkish Baths, which have been restored to their 19th century Moorish glory, and allow visitors to experience the pools and steam rooms that attracted people to Harrogate centuries ago. At the Victorian Royal Pump Room, you can visit Europe’s strongest sulphur wells in Europe, which were visited by the Tsarina of Russia in 1911. In the museum, you can learn about the town’s spa-history, and marvel at its collection of Egyptian artefacts.
