Kolugljufur Waterfall

Named after a salmon-loving giantess, this pretty gorge near the road shows that natural beauty abounds in Iceland.

About

Right next to the road, Kolugljufur Waterfall is often overlooked by drivers just going on their way. But this easily-accessible cascade is the picturesque beginning of a kilometer-long canyon, which contains even more falls and rapids. According to local folklore, the giant Kola lived on the edge of the gorge so she could easily catch salmon from the river below. While she’d usually eat them raw, occasionally she would throw them into the nearby Koluketill Kettle, a hole in the ground filled with boiling water, to cook. Visitors can walk to the viewing area right next to the falls, and also stand on the bridge over the gorge for a completely different perspective.
