Romania
Overshadowed by the area’s better known attractions, this little city’s historic center is rife with medieval monuments without the crowds.
Founded by the Romans, the city was resettled by the Saxons in the 13th century. Like most other towns in Transylvania, the 33 Saxon craft guild built up strong fortifications which they maintained and defended. The city’s historic core has been preserved to this day thanks to their effectiveness. Dominating the town center, the fortified church of St. Margaret was erected in the 15th century, and was once used to imprison Vlad the Impaler. Over the years, it received some stylistic updates, and now has a colorful baroque organ accompanying its beautiful Gothic altarpieces, 15th century frescoes, and collection of 14th century bronze artifacts and Oriental carpets. Another relic of the medieval fortifications is the 15th century Trumpeter’s Tower, which was once used as a lookout, and received a clock showing the phases of the moon in 1880.
