Costa Rica
Discover the plants and animals of Costa Rica’s lush rainforest as you move from floor to canopy.
The Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park was founded with a single purpose: to protect the rainforest while allowing visitors to discover it in a safe and sustainable way. Located at the transition between highland and lowland forest, the Mistico Arenal park is exceptionally diverse, with over 700 species of plant, more than 300 bird species, as well as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Between November and February, the park offers an excellent place to watch the mass raptor migrations, and it’s the only ‘biological corridor’ that sees megafauna like puma, jaguar, and tapir moving between the Guanacaste and Tilarán Volcanic Ranges. On the 2 mile hiking trail, visitors work their way through the rain forest and across 6 hanging bridges, the tallest of which is 148 high. While you can walk through the park by yourself, it’s best to sign up for a guided tour. Not only will their trained eyes spot plants and animals the casual visitor would miss, but they’ll be able to share more insights into the park and its inhabitants.
