Monk's Hill Hike

A captivating journey to Great Fort George, Antigua and Barbuda’s largest colonial fortification, is perched along this impressive hilltop.

About

The ruins of Great Fort George sit atop Monk’s Hill, as a vast green stone fort built in 1689 which aimed to serve as a retreat for the island’s plantocracy during times of attack. Today, the ruins of Great Fort George reward hikers with remarkable vistas of the entire island, from the Sherkley Mountains to Willoughby Bay, encompassing English Harbour and the airport. Starting from Piccadilly, near St. James Club, the hike ascends to around 700 meters, revealing the island’s breathtaking landscapes. Traversing grassy tracks and stone paths, the journey showcases a mix of tropical forest and arid scrub desert. Cacti and lush greenery punctuate the landscape, while panoramic southern views open up to Falmouth Harbour and the distant English Harbour. The hike follows a narrow stone road, winding gently upwards and offering a pleasant stroll. While the fort itself is a ruin, its historical significance permeates the air, and the vantage point provides a deep connection to Antigua’s past.
