Established in 1871, the Museum has been in its current Neoclassical building since 1901. Representing the entire development of the Etruscan civilization, the exhibition is organized chronologically over two floors of the building. Many of the well-preserved artefacts came from private collections clustered during 19th and 20th centuries, and from local excavations. On display are signature regional Etruscan productions, such as laminated bronzes, stone statues and reliefs, and sarcophagi and urns made of clay and alabaster. The museum also houses imported products like painted Greek vases. The statue of Augustus, considered one of the most refined portraits of the emperor. The collection is rounded out by rich and precious Lombard grave goods. Outside of town, the museum also offers tours of ancient Etruscan tombs, such as the 5th century BC ‘Tomb of the Monkey’, with its ancient frescoes, including its namesake representation of a monkey tied to a bush.
