Portogruaro

With its rich art and architecture, it might come as a surprise that this scenic river city was started by fishermen.

About

In 1140, this river port was founded when the Archbishop of Concordia, gave a group of fishermen the right to settle here. One of the first buildings erected was the Abbey of Summaga, in 1211. While the facade is an 18th century renovation, its frescoes date from the 11th–12th centuries. In 1420, after centuries under Patria del Friuli, it was conquered by the Republic of Venice. Walking past the 12th century water mills, and buildings supported on columns, you can’t help but make a comparison the the Floating City. The Gothic Town Hall from 1265 houses three paintings by Italian Futurist, Luigi Russolo. Portogruaro is a city that rewards exploration, where hidden gems like a 17th century wooden oratory are just as beautiful as the series of 14th–15th-century palaces.
