A historic wooden church in the municipality of Odda in Hordaland county is a postcard of medieval architecture.
The Roldal Stave Church was built in the 13th century and is known for its unique architectural style and rich history. Situated in the small village of Roldal, the church is surrounded by majestic mountains and lush green forests. One of its most striking features is its exterior, decorated with intricate carvings and elaborate details. During its restoration in the 17th century, colorful wall paintings were discovered inside and the altar was decorated with beautiful imagery depicting scenes from the Bible and local legends. A magnificent crucifix located above the entrance to the choir, dating back to 1250, is said to have healing powers. According to legend, every 6th of July after the Julian calendar, the crucifix would sweat with restorative properties. The church is now a preserved historic museum but is still used for worship services twice a month. Entry is NOK80.
